What to do with unfinished paintings?
Seeing unfinished paintings can stir up feelings of self-doubt and frustrations. Those canvases lurking in piles, leaning against walls or hiding behind other paintings will trigger thoughts like “what was I thinking”, “I’m not a good artist”. However, it’s important for me to remember that every brush stroke I make contributes to my growth whether the painting is complete or not. Instead of fixating on what’s unfinished, I try to appreciate the journey and the progress I’ve made as an artist.
Sometimes I will throw away those unfinished paintings or I may paint over them, and if it’s a watercolor I will cut them up and turn them into smaller paintings. If it’s a painting I think I can salvage I will experiment with other mediums to change the look. These are a few ideas to put those demons aside.
It’s completely normal to feel frustrated or have self-doubt when you see unfinished paintings. Remember, every artist has moments of doubt or dissatisfaction with their work. Instead of focusing on what’s unfinished, try to appreciate all the works you finished, the works hanging on your walls and the works you have sold. Keep pushing forward, keep creating and make your mark.
