Joanne Willoughby

Joanne Willoughby is an accomplished artist from Pawleys Island, South Carolina.

Can you tell us about yourself?

When I was young I always had a sketchbook going. I did watercolor and tempera like most kids starting out. I was drawing a lot. I was lucky to have art class in primary and secondary school. Back then I think it was more of a staple. I took art in high school and was going to try to major in art in college but I had to attend one close to home so I could live at home and work part time and wasn’t accepted as an art major as the art department was small at that time. So I took a year of liberal arts and left college for hairdressing school. I used a lot of creativity in that field.

When did your artistic journey begin?

I got back into painting with a oil class I took from a wonderful artist I found in an art supply store. After oils I discovered pastels and never looked back. I now work mostly in pastels and oils with some acrylic and watercolor, and charcoal as well.

I try to paint every day or at least get a frame made or a painting framed (I make some of my own frames and usually frame my own work). I try to stay active on IG and FB and I’ve had some sales as a result.

What's the best piece of advice you've received as an artist?

I think some great advice I’ve heard is paint what you love. Try not to compare your success with others, or your failures. Be open up new possibilities and mediums. I love trying new things and experimenting.

What are some of your goals for yourself or your art?

I am currently in 2 galleries locally. I would like to get work into a couple more a little further afield. That’s one of my goals.

What are you struggling with right now?

My biggest struggle right now is a health issue I’ve had since my 30s. I don’t talk about it much. I was diagnosed with Rheumatoid Arthritis when my girls were little and probably have some Fibromyalgia as well though it’s harder to diagnose that.
Fatigue is the hardest part for me as there’s so much I want to do. But I take each day as it comes and do what I can. I’m blessed to live in a supportive art community here in Pawleys Island. I love what I do.
