Kim Morin Weineck
I’m a landscape painter, endlessly inspired by nature with the good fortune of hailing from an immensely creative family of painters, chefs, potters, carpenters, writers, and actors. I live in Massachusetts with my wonderful Tim and our two teen daughters. It’s a busy time for us all, but it is also really great.
When did your journey as an artist begin?
Art was not a regular subject in my Catholic schooling, so it took me a while to realize I have artistic talent. It was my best friend since kindergarten who set me straight during college. History was my first major, but eventually as an older student I found my way to art school.
ALL IS CALM |
What inspires you the most?
Mother Nature! She makes everything!
Do you use any tricks for dealing with distraction and procrastination?
Distraction is intense and constant and procrastination is about so much more than being lazy. Most important to deal with them both is to have quiet time with yourself (bonus if it’s in nature) and listen carefully to that voice inside you. Answer the voice with “yes, and…” then see what happens.
A fun practice I’ve adopted is to collect bits of wisdom and post them where they’ll be seen. “Comparison is the thief of joy” and “If nothing happens nothing happens” are good ones for me right now.
What’s the best piece of advice you’ve received as an artist?
Years back, a critique offered that some lighter spots in a section of green I had painted were quite lovely. When I dismissed the compliment as having just “happened” without my direct intent to put them there, the response “but you left them in” was eye-opening to me.
Painting is not always about connecting many dots or planning every mark. Sometimes painting is what happens by chance.

Describe a challenging project you worked on and how you overcame the challenges.
In 2023 I completed the 100 days project creating an original painting every day. Daily life, family issues, boredom, procrastination, other project deadlines, etc all tried to thwart finishing my goal. Inevitably I completed the challenge because I decided I wanted to. I prioritized it and made sure others knew it was a priority too.
In a practical sense, I also set up some safeties: standard size for all the work, purchase all supplies ahead of time so they’re at hand and the money was spent and needed to be used wisely/not wasted, time limit on works, and a to-do list for each day prioritizing the painting.
Many people offer that you can paint ahead, but for this project I set the goal that I would start and complete a new work each day. Things that helped me included posting the project on social media for accountability, selling work as it was created, asking friends/followers for references to keep creatively inspired (and with a keen purchasing interest), and watching each day get closer to 100.
I learned new things, stretched creative muscles, sold a lot of work, gained new fans, was asked to do demos for new groups, and became an efficient painter through this project and recommend anyone who wants to try it to give it a go. It’s wonderful to say it’s something you completed.
How do you overcome creative blocks?
Rest is work. Give yourself time to lay fallow. It can also help to reframe time not spent painting as time spent recharging your creative battery.
Walks in nature help me be newly inspired, too.
When all else fails, a trip to the art supply store usually can do the trick. A new color of paint, surface, or gadget can often get me going again.
What are you currently working on?
I work in all mediums but find my pastels to be the most fresh, perhaps because there’s no traditional color mixing as with tubes of paint. Lately I’m using a limited palette when I paint with either gouache, acrylic, or oil to see if I can make the results as exciting as I find my pastels to be. I am having so much fun!

DeleteThank you for this opportunity, Ria. I’m happy to have had the chance to answer these questions and think about some of these topics myself. I look forward to reading future interviews with artists! - Kim Morin Weineck (I couldn’t log in with Google for some reason)
